Yes, registering with the Police department of the city is a must. All they need (at least in San Jose) is your name, driver's license number etc. They will register it.
You dont need permit for walking on sidewalks. You need permit only if you plan to stop traffic and block streets. None of us want to do that.
Check with your city's police department and find out how to register for march on sidewalks without stopping traffic. I guess that's a lot easier than getting permits to stop traffic etc.
Now, as to rallies other than San Jose rally, if you plan to lead the rally and get the event registered, then please email me at jay@Immigrationvoice.org and I will help you get members. I have list of all members and their states and once you finalize the event, I will email the entire list and point them to you. I will also provide you with material, guidance and Immigration voice's message and talking points should you be approached by a reporter. In fact, its a good idea to tell local papers in your area before hand so that the know to cover the event.
Members in NYC, Washington DC, Chicago, LA etc should have absolutely no problems in finding enough members planning to walk on the street for an hour. I will help you find enough participants in your city, if you send me an email and if you are ready to lead these events.

Once you abandon H1B and get canadian PR, you will need visitor visa to come back to US. My friend did that he comes quite often to visit us.

Dear Friend,
Let me first of all thank you for taking a strong stand for your highly skilled employees at this critical time. I am on an H1b visa and am a certified professional working in this country. I just wanted to ask you a few question. The biotech firms employ a lot of people on H1b visas. How come none of them, excluding Genentech, is included in the compete america group's letter to the congress. I strongly feel and pharmaceutical companies, contract research organizations, other biotech companies should also be included to stand for the H1b visa and green card issue for their employees. Seccond question I would like to ask is about the provision to renew the H1b in increment of 3 years each after the 6th year, which apparently has been taken off in this new CIR bill. This is a very technical issue and employers would not want to loose the trained employees after the 6th year period. It does not make any sense to refuse renewability of the H1b after 6 years since by that time that employee has already become an asset to the company or this nation. Please make sure to stand for that particular issue. H1b should be renewable in increments of 3 years each if the GC has been filed by the 5th year. Let me thank you for successfully campaigning for increasing the H1b numbers and hopefully this will enable me to move from my present acadamic position (Ast Prof at XXXXXX) to an Industry. VB date for EB3 is now un available.
In my case (EB2). The VB date is 15FEB04. Families VB date is 08OCT04(my spouse). Only 6months diff.

Love India, gave me the best time.
Came to US for higher education. Love USA.
Not yet in the GC mess, but if I want to stay here, I will have to get in. (Hoping that the problem will be solved by the time I apply :D )
Visited India and love the progress. The final act of moving to India is not always GC, money or lifestyle. It boils down to the family one has in India. Having been away from India for long, don't feel comfortable with relatives anymore. Recently lost my dad, who meant everything to me. Can't think of going back to a place where he is not there anymore!
Good luck to all who decide to go back to India and Good luck to all who decide to stay back in the US.

Did you receive teh physical cards by now?
My Case:
08/12/08 - Approval Notice Sent message (This is the only message I got)
08/18/08 - Received the Approval notice by post

I actually spoke to Customer service and I got 2 very different responses.
1. Wait till you are an old man and then the cards may just come !! (Just Kidding ) she actually said wait for 90 days.
2. Another CSR told me that the TSC is having technical issues and they are not able to access the Biometric information on approved 485's in their systems. She advised me to download Form I-90 from the USCIS site and fill that in and send it in - if you have a minor on the petition then also send 2 passport size pictures of the minor - this will allow them to access the Biometric screen when they process the I-90. We will get Biometric notices and the Minor will get the card - the Grown ups will get the Cards after the Biometrics are uploaded.
I have not done this - eventhough I downloaded the I-90 forms - I took a INFOPASS appt and if they suggest that I should do a I-90 then I can get that done right on the spot - I am carrying the filled I-90 with me. Anyhow I-90 is usually submitted to correct errors on the card or to replace a card - however this woman sounded quite knowledgeable - but then there are issues realted to where the I-90 should be sent - this is specially complicated if your case has been transferred a few times like mine was.
Best is to check with the guys/gals at Infopass -meeting.
All this was from the rep at the TSC - so not sure if this is applicable to all centers.
AGAIN THIS IS WHAT I HEARD FROM THE TSC REP - PLEASE USE THIS INFORMATION AT YOUR OWN RISK - I AM NOT SENDING THE I-90 ON MY OWN.

Wanted to know what the members here think of the probability of receiving RFE from USCIS to find out whether the applicant is still in a "same or similar" job when the time comes to adjudicate cases for for EB3 India.
I ask this because in a poll conducted in a separate thread, it seems the number of people waiting for their GCs are more with PDs before Dec 2004 than after that date.
When the dates become current again for these people, do you think USCIS will be sending RFEs to get the employment information for every single of them ? Is there is a percentage from the pending applications that they pick for RFE, assuming all applicants who changed employers DID NOT notify USCIS when they changed jobs OR is it completely up to the whims of the adjudicating officer to send an RFE ?
There are several people I know who changed employers with EAD, never notified USCIS and got their GCs without any RFE. Trying to understand whether USCIS will think twice before sending RFEs for everyone as the number of applicants waiting with PDs of 2004 and earlier are huge now than ever before. Ha ha Congrats....
Story of my life. I complain about delay with my application. Someone joins me and tells me they are in the same boat and the very next day that someone leaves the boat and jumps into "greener" pastures. Everyone is leaving the boat and I seem to be left out :(
Who else are in my boat? (Application with an officer for over 2 weeks and still status = "Initial Review")
me too in same boat. :) In my case USCIS have wrong priority date on my case. On their records it somehow shows Jan 2006, while it should be Jul 2003. I have tried to get it resolved but they haven't done anything about it [had tried Ombudsman (7001), Senator, congressman, SR etc]. Funny thing is even the incorrect priority date is current now. Tell me what wrong he did for him to apologize and I will apologize to you. When nothing is permanent he worked with them for 1 and half years, he got them 4 employees. Why in the world should he apologize?.
When you say that you will not need your clients you are wrong. when I was searching for projects I got a chance to apply to a job opening in one of my previous client, guess what, the start to my second stint was smooth just because I had a good rapport with my client and they liked my work. I even got one of my team mates in my client place to give me a referral for my higher studies.
"Your ex boss is not a bad guy, he knows you are leaving for better opportunity".He is not only a bad guy, he is evil IF (note the big IF) he is keeping the money which is not his. Their conscience should prick when they feed and give excellent education to their kids with the ill gotten money.
Unfortunately one might need his ex-employer in future (might not always be the case) and that is the irony of it all.
I feel the same..you will always need the ex clients than ex employer.
Why you need the experience letter?
Appointment letter is good enough for green card purposes and as far as reference letter, I always got them from client.

2. Non compete agreement.
Getting back salary is not a big deal. These type of cases never goes to the court and most o the employers will settle out of court.

we got I-140 and I-485 approval email on August 19th; Card production ordered email on August 21st; got the physical approvals and cards in the mail on August 25th - whole thing took a week.

I did called NSC IO yesterday and she said that my packet must have been in caught up in the front log.
Looks like all our 485 packets have been xfered to TSC from NSC. Hence SRCXXXXXXXXX

Wait for a couple of more weeks-- It is on the way. Don't go by the dates USCIS posted. They apparently don't correctly reflect the actual.
